THE TOWN OF BATTLE

The beginning of the history of the English Nation started on the 14th October 1066 - at Battle. Battle Abbey is the site of the Battle of Hastings. The Benedictine Abbey of St.Martin was built by  William the Conqueror on the spot where Harold fell.

The Church of St.Mary the Virgin was built on the edge of the battlefield by the monks for the people of Battel. It dates from 1115.
